New and Exciting Tunes/News

Pajama Club:  New Zealand hit-maker Neil Finn (Split Enz/Crowded House) has formed a new group with his wife Sharon.  Dubbed the Pajama Club, reportedly from sitting around the house and jamming in their bedroom attire, the self titled debut is raucous good fun.  From the sounds of the first single, the minimalist Funk of “Tell me what you Want” and a live in the studio Space-Rock track “From a Friend to a Friend,” Pajama Club sounds like it has success written all over it.

Former Danger-Danger guitarist Andy Timmons has released his latest all instrumental disc – an interpretation of The Andy Timmons.jpg (64903 bytes) Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.  “I had been playing some of these songs live and they were always received very well,” said Timmons.  “It was natural to put this out.  I’m proud of it.”  Fellow guitarist-extraordinaire Steve Vai added, “It’s done very respectfully.  I think his fans and many Beatles fans will love it.”  Timmon’s previous tribute to George Harrison, “Slips Away,” has been a recurring source of inspiration at Cottage Views since it was brought to our attention in 2002 on the release of the Favored Nations compilation disc That Was Then, This Is Now.

Sir Paul McCartney has tied the knot with NY businesswoman Nancy Shevell.  The two were married on October 9 (John Lennon’s birth day), in London.  The happy couple’s service took place at the Old Marylebone Town Hall, where Macca famously wed his first wife Linda.  Former Beatle Ringo Starr was in attendance, and the couple wore clothes designed by Paul’s daughter Stella.  Paul’s youngest child Beatrice served as a bridesmaid.  Her mother, Heather Mills, was reportedly nowhere to be seen.

While we await the 2012 DVD release of Martin Scorsese’s documentary George Harrison:  Living in the Material World a photo book has been released with many previously unseen photos and quotes from family and friends.  Other Beatles-related items on sale for the holidays include the next installment of impeccably detailed coffee table books from Bruce Spizer – Beatles for Sale on Parlophone Records, and the long awaited biography of Badfinger guitarist Joey MollandBadfinger and Beyond by Michael A. Cimino.  Click Here for more info

Billed as "Good Ol' Freda" - the untold story of Freda Kelly, The Beatles' trusted secretary and friend throughout their rise to fame – is film in the making by Tripod Media in California.  In a new way to support the arts, the makers of the film are asking fans to fund the finishing of the project through www.Kickstarter.com.  Go to the site, read the fascinating back story of the woman who “once held one of the highest-profile secretarial jobs ever,” and donate.  Her stories are charming, her memories worth hearing, and this project is worth every penny. photo of Freda and Joey Molland courtesy of K. God Bless Ozzy Osbourne is a new DVD documentary that reveals the life story of one of Rock’s most notoriously toxic stars.  Seen through the eyes of his son, Jack Osbourne, who worked alongside directors Mike Fleiss and Mike Piscatelli, the film promises to be a no-holds barred, screamingly revealing, jaunt through Ozzy’s addictions, troubles, and successes.

Another new DVD documentary The Hollies – Look Through Any Window 1963-1975 has just been released, which includes 22 complete vintage television performances and new interviews with original band members Graham Nash, Allan Clarke, Tony Hicks, and Bobby Elliot.  The Hollies were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in March of this year.

British darlings Status Quo quietly slipped out their 30th album this past season.  Entitled Quid Pro Quo the disc features the hit-makers (64 British hit singles) romping through 15 bristling tracks, including a re-make of “In the Army Now.”  When is America going to catch on?

After two solo albums Jacob Dylan has reported that his band, The Wallflowers, will reunite for a new album in 2012.  Recording is slated to commence in January.  The band’s last studio effort was Rebel, Sweetheart which was released in 2005.  “I’ve got new songs and we’ve all been talking,” Dylan said. “We’ve been trying to carve that time out for a while.”

For those who prefer Peter Gabriel’s more experimental/avant-garde style, check into New Blood a new film that captures Gabriel backed by a 46 piece orchestra recorded in London this past spring.  The collection will be available in multiple formats, including 3 D.

Oh, yeah.  REM broke up.

Rolling Stones/Mick Jagger/Dave Stewart

Following up on the great visual releases Stones In Exile and Ladies and Gentlemen (scroll down to older news for review) Eagle Rock Entertainment have set a Nov. 21 release date for Some Girls – Live in Texas 1978 (DVD and Blue Ray).  Special editions with CDs included will be available that will include a reproduction of the original tour program and a new interview with Mick Jagger.  Filmed at the Will Rogers Memorial Center in Fort Worth, Texas, in July of 1978 the film captures the Stones at their “back to basics” best at a time when their latest album was perched at the top of the charts.  That same day Universal Music Group will re-release the original studio album Some Girls (remastered).  The classic album will be available both as a CD and a deluxe version that includes newly unearthed tracks from the Rolling Stones vaults and a 7” single of “Beast of Burden/When the Whip comes Down” with the original banned picture sleeve.

Meanwhile, Mick Jagger has teamed up with producer Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics, singer Joss Stone, Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley (Bob’s son) and world musician A. R. Rahman for a collection of tunes under the banner of Super Heavy.  Incorporating Blues, Rock, Reggae, Bhangra, and Soul the debut recording came about after a musical discussion between Stewart and Jagger about melding Rock with World Music.

Stewart has not only produced this set, but also a collection for Joss Stone, LP1, which is her Blues-iest recording to date, and his first solo album in over ten years, The Blackbird Diaries.    Blackbird Diaries was predominantly recorded in Nashville with a host of guest stars, including Stevie Nicks, and Martina McBride.  Bob Dylan contributed lyrics.

In more related news, Mick Jagger has teamed up with Martin Scorcese for a new HBO television drama about the seventies Rock scene.  According to the Hollywood Reporter the show will be based upon the exploits of a “cocaine fueled record executive in New York City circa 1977 when Punk, Disco, and Hip-Hop collided.”

StyxRegeneration (2 discs)

Although it has been many years since the classic line-up of Styx has worked together, the current formation of the band has been intact for several years keeping long time fans happy as well as slowly winning over new ones.  To drive that point home is the now commercially available two disc collection, Regeneration Vols. 1 & 2.  Originally intended as an audience souvenir only available at concerts Regeneration packs hits, album tracks, and solo material re-recorded with the current lineup.  Expect Styx to follow this up with the  release of The Grand Illusion/Pieces of Eight – Live on CD and DVD in early 2012.

The Journey Continues…

Vinyl has been making a major comeback in recent years and with the new release of Journey – Greatest Hits Volume 2 there is a very good chance that we may see the first gold/platinum record awarded to a true “album” once again.  Sony/Legacy not only plans to release the new disc as a double album with gatefold sleeve this November but will also re-release Journey’s original Greatest Hits (over 25 million sold worldwide) in the same medium.  Both double albums will come with a code for a free digital download of the re-mastered tracks.  Greatest Hits Volume 2 spans singles and album tracks recorded between 1978 and 1996, and had input from vocalist Steve Perry.  “I truly forgot how sonically exciting and just plain better these Journey tracks sound back where they originally lived… on vinyl,” said Perry.  “The stereo separation, the center imaging and the sonic depth of the tracks is more true to what we all loved about these original final mixes.”  While Greatest Hits Volume 1 leans heavily on the Steve Perry penned Pop-Rock sound of the band, Volume 2 tilts the scale back into balance for fans of Journey’s more Melodic-Rock with several tracks that feature founder Gregg Rolie on keys and vocals.  Some of the real treats contained here come from his canon; the minor hits “Just the Same Way” and “Feeling that Way/Anytime” (an FM radio staple of yesteryear), and “Little Girl” from the soundtrack of Dream, After Dream.    Perry fans will rejoice as well with the re-mastered sound of the perennial favorite “Patiently” and the vocal histrionics of the live “Mother, Father.”  Journey will be honored with the prestigious Legend of Live Award this month at the Billboard Touring and Conference Awards ceremony in New York for “significant and lasting contributions to live music and the touring business.”  Previous award winners include the Allman Brothers Band, Sir Elton John, Rush, and Ozzy Osbourne.

Deepest Purple – New Releases and News

Roger Glover – bassist of the legendary band Deep Purple has released his first solo disc in almost ten years – If Life Was Easy – Roger Glover and the Guilty Party.  The disc contains sixteen tracks written in the aftermath of Glover’s divorce that range from introspection to jubilation.  Vocal contributions come from a host of Hard Rock royalty, including Dan McCafferty and Pete Agnew of Nazareth and Mickey Lee Soule of Elf/Rainbow.

In related Deep Purple news comes the re-issue of keyboardist John Lord’s 1976 symphonic Rock instrumental disc recorded with the Hungarian Philharmonic and Andy Summers (later of The Police) – Sarabande.

Additionally, Deep Purple’s early works (Shades of Deep Purple, The Book of Taliesyn, Deep Purple) have been given the deluxe treatment and have been re-issued with rare bonus tracks, studio outtakes, and BBC jams.

More for the collector:  also released are four live double discs that capture the band in various incarnations doing what they do best – rock in front of an audience.  Scandinavian Nights from 1970 was originally recorded for Swedish radio during the In Rock tour and includes a cover of the Rolling Stones’ “Paint it Black.”  In Concert 1970-1972 was recorded for the BBC and includes the classic “Smoke on the Water” and a 21 minute version of “Space Truckin’.”  Live in London captures a 1974 concert with then front-men David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes in support of the album Burn.  The final collection, MK III – The Final Concerts, documents guitarist Ritchie Blackmore’s last concerts with the group before moving on to other projects.  Blackmore was eventually replaced by Tommy Bolin (ex of The James Gang) before the group disbanded in the 70s.

Deep Purple - Phoenix Rising.JPG (365205 bytes)    The real gem in Purple news is the release of the documentary DVD/Blue Ray Phoenix Rising.  Also available as a deluxe box with CD, Phoenix Rising is a tour de force with previously un-bootlegged concert footage of Tommy Bolin ripping through Purple classics on a Japanese stage shortly before the band’s eventual breakup and Bolin’s unfortunate death.  The second part of the disc contains extensive interviews from keyboardist Jon Lord and bassist Glenn Hughes who recant Purple’s story of transition from the Ritchie Blackmore/Ian Gillan lineup to what would prove to be the last incarnation of the group for almost a decade.  It is a fascinating look into the world’s gorilla mentality of the seventies, beyond excess and addiction.  Also enlightening is the respect paid to a young David Coverdale, whose reputation has slipped a bit in recent years.  Included is a 28 page booklet with photos and articles from the era.  Badfinger fans take note of the Nicky Bell/Clearwell Castle connection.

Also coming before the holiday season is the 2 hour concert Deep Purple + Orchestra Live at Montreux 2011 on 2 CD, DVD, and Blu-Ray.  The current touring lineup of Ian Gillan (vocals), Ian Paice (drums), Roger Glover (bass), Steve Morse (guitar), and Don Airey (keyboards) were captured for these discs on July 16 of this year.

Related:  This past August Jon Lord revealed on his website that he is suffering from cancer.  In his statement he wrote, “I would like all my friends, followers, fans and fellow travelers to know that I am fighting cancer and will therefore be taking a break from performing while getting the treatment and cure.  I shall of course be continuing to write music – in my world it just has to be part of the therapy – and I fully expect to be back in good shape next year.”

Strawbs Release New and Archival Collections

Strawbs collectors and fans will be happy this season with the release of some interesting CDs from the Witchwood Media company.  First up was the late summer release of Strawbs – Hero and Heroine In Ascencia, a complete 2011 digital re-recording of their 1973 masterpiece featuring founder Dave Cousins, guitarist Dave Lambert, and bassist Chas Cronk recording alongside erstwhile Strawbs drummer Tony Fernandez (Rick Wakeman band) and keyboardist John Young (Scorpions/Bonnie Tyler).  Eschewing the Gothic flourishes of the original, In Ascencia has a ‘live-in-the-studio’ modern sound.  For traditionalists endearing tracks like “Autumn” or “Hero and Heroine” may sound weakened, but others may find a track like “Sad Young Man” liberating as Cousins’ vocals no longer sound plaintive but positively pissed-off, and by the time you get to “Round and Round” you can just imagine him onstage, arm flailing about his head, madness consuming him.  Most fans will be content to now have both versions available.

What could arguably considered the first Acoustic Strawbs album, Old School Songs by Dave Cousins and Brian Willoughby has been rescued from ‘out of print’ status and has be re-issued with bonus tracks.  This previously hard-to-find 1979 recording now sounds as fresh as if it were written and recorded this week.

Strawbs Acoustic Gold is treasure for the many fans who find Strawbs music a stabilizing force for balance during the autumn season when we are encouraged to return to nature and the positive energy of the spirit.  This impeccably selected collection compiled by Dave Cousins flows like autumn leaves on a cool breeze, capturing candlelit romance in a glass of deep red wine.  Featuring previously unreleased tracks as well as DVD-only recordings and selections from the three official Acoustic Strawbs discs, the collection spans over 30 years of Strawbs highlights in acoustic settings.  Any one of these tracks is radio ready for the myriad of adult contemporary satellite stations being programmed today.

Also released by Witchwood Media is an official bootleg from the late Sandy Denny.  Sandy Denny with Alex Campbell – 19 Rupert Street is exactly what it sounds like.  Sandy and Alex Campbell recorded in the living room of Alex’s Glasgow home to a quarter track tape deck on August 5, 1967, just weeks from the recording of Sandy and the Strawbs’ debut album.   Edited and cleaned up by Dave Cousins and producer Chris Tsangarides, the disc features Sandy singing the earliest versions of her own “Who Knows Where the Time Goes” and the traditional “She Moves through the Fair” as well as other standards and carols.  Most of the between song banter has been left intact and Cousins provides noteworthy insight into the liner notes.

Live Collections for the Collectors

Gary MooreLive at Montreux 2010 (DVD)– his last ever performance which shows his return to Rock after years of exploring the Blues idiom has just hit shelves.  At the time of his death in February of 2011 Moore was working on a full tilt Rock and Roll record.  Live at Montreux features three new songs that were intended for the album he didn’t get to finish.  In addition the DVD includes two bonus tracks “Still Got the Blues” and “Military Man.”

Former Free/Bad Company front-man Paul Rodgers also checks in with a Live in Montreux collection (CD and DVD sold separately) recorded in 1994 with famous friends Brian May (Queen), Jason Bonham (son of the late Led Zeppelin sticks-man John Bonham), Neil Schon (Santana/Journey) for a collection of greatest hits and Blues covers, including “All Right Now,” “Feel like making Love,” and “Can’t Get Enough.”

Emerson Lake & Palmer - 40th Anniversary Reunion Concert (DVD) captures ELP live at London's first High Voltage Rock Festival in 2010.  It was the only time the band has performed together since 1998.  The 90 minute performance is augmented by a 30 minute documentary with interviews with the band.

July 2011

Eagle Rock Entertainment have 2 new releases of note; The Jeff Healey Band Live at Grossman's 1994 (CD) and The Doobie Brothers Live at the Greek 1982 (CD and DVD).  Healey, the late guitar wiz noted for playing stinging leads in lap steel fashion, was recorded at the same hometown Toronto tavern where he was first discovered.  Included in the set are scorching versions of John Lennon's "Yer Blues," Bob Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower," and Blues-Rock standards "Dust My Broom" and "Crossroads."  The Doobies set, also recorded in front of a hometown crowd, comes from the Michael McDonald led era of the band and features a blockbuster encore of "China Grove" and "Listen to the Music" with surprise guests original Doobie Brothers Tom Johnston, Tiran Porter and Michael Hossack.  The 2 hour DVD included bonus songs cut from the original film and interviews with the band as well as their manager, Bruce Cohn of BR Cohn Vineyard.

April 2011

The Long Awaited new Solo Disc from Stevie Nicks is due to hit store shelves the first week of May.  Entitled In Your Dreams, the disc was co-written and produced by Eurthymics' Dave Stewart.  "I had to keep asking Dave whether we were making a Beatles album," said Nicks.  "I haven't had this much fun since Lindsey [Buckingham] and I were working in the beginning.  This has been the best musical year of my life."  Meanwhile, Nicks is out on tour with another Stewart - Rod that is.  Coming off of several albums of standards Rod Stewart will also have a new disc of Rock music out this year, tentatively titled Unfinished Business that will be a collaboration with his old boss Jeff Beck.

Yes Record First New Material in Ten Years

The current line-up of Yes (pictured left with producer Trevor Horn center) are preparing their first new recordings in a decade.  This is the longest gap between studio recordings in the bands long career.  The project began after bassist Chris Squire and one time front-man and producer Trevor Horn discussed the track "Fly From Here," a thirty year old song that Yes had performed on their 1980 tour, but never properly recorded in the studio.  Horn agreed to helm the recording of the twenty-plus minute epic if it could be completed in a two week time frame.  From there it escalated to production of a full albums worth of material providing Yes would agree to bring in keyboardist Geoff Downes to replace touring member Oliver Wakeman (Downes is the co-writer of the track and Horn's partner in The Buggles, as well as a founding member of Asia).  At this time there is no set release date of the disc which features 4 additional songs that clock in at the 5 - 6 minute range.  Cover art will once again be provided by long-time collaborator Roger Dean, and vocals will be provided by newcomer Benoit David.  The band is rounded out by long time members Alan White on drums and Steve Howe on guitars.  Founding member Squire said, "The new album represents the best of Yes from the 70s and the 80s with a current twist."

Ray Davies about to deliver Collaborations Disc

April 5th will see the release of See My Friends, a collection of Kinks classics performed by Kinks main songwriter Ray Davies and his famous friends.  The genesis of the project developed after Davies and the late Box Tops/Big Star vocalist Alex Chilton reworked a version of Davies' "Till the End of the Day" back in 2009.  From there the collaborations spiraled, with Davies traveling to New Jersey to record with Bruce Springsteen ("Better Things"), Chicago, New York, Oslo, Germany, Denmark, Belgium, and London.  Highlights include contributions from Jackson Browne ("Waterloo Sunset"),  Metallica ("You Really Got Me"), and newcomers Mumford & Sons ("Days/This Time Tomorrow").

Original Rolling Stones Reunite for Tribute

Due out in April Boogie 4 Stu:  A Tribute to Ian Stewart will feature a cover of Bob Dylan's "Watching the River Flow" by the Rolling Stones, including Bill Wyman on bass - the first time the original surviving members have recorded since 1992.  The Ben Waters helmed disc will benefit the British Heart Foundation and will be released on April 19 on the Eagle Rock Entertainment label - approximately 25 years after the passing of Ian Stewart, a founding member of the Rolling Stones who went on to serve as their long-term road manager.  The disc features drummer Charlie Watts on most tracks (Waters and Watts work together in Watt's side project A, B, C & D of Boogie Woogie), Keith Richards on three, and guest appearances from Jools Holland and Waters' cousin PJ Harvey.  In a press statement, Richards said, "Ian Stewart.  I'm still working for him.  To me the Rolling Stones is his band.  Without his knowledge and organization... ...we'd be nowhere."

An Open Letter in Response to Rolling Stone Magazine's Claim

"In 2010 there wasn't a single major Rock hit."

In today's day and age I suppose it's what constitutes "a hit," my friends, because if you're reading this I don't suppose you pay much attention to the Pop Charts.  In 2010 there was plenty of good new music, and much of it would be considered Rock.  So who's headphones/IPod was Rolling Stone listening to?  Justin Bieber's?  Just think about it... Mumford & Sons' "Little Lion Man" wasn't a hit?  Their debut wasn't "major"?  In the words of Charlie Sheen, and according to Cottage Views, Mumford & Sons debut was Epic!  So was Florence & the Machine and Broken Bells.  Rock isn't dead, fellas.  Rock just went back to where it came from... underground.  So, what else was a major hit in 2010 at Cottage Views?  Norah Jones - "It's Gonna Be," Ringo Starr - "Mystery of the Night" and "Walk with You," John Fogerty & Bruce Springsteen - "When Will I Be Loved," Steve Miller Band - "Hey Yeah" and "Sweet Soul Vibe," Heart - "Hey You," Peter Wolf - "Watch Her Move" and "There's Still Time," Peter Wolf & Neko Case - "The Green Fields of Summer," and Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers - "High in the Morning."

Additionally, let me state... I was going to write some reviews on new discs from Classic Rock's elite - Tom Petty, Heart, Steve Miller, Eric Clapton... all who released new music in 2010... but...  here's the rap...

Tom Petty and Heart stayed true to their original sound and got tons of press last year, and great reviews.  But the truth of the matter here is they are on major labels who have the dough to buy their artists this kind of exposure.  And you know what?  Both discs have stellar production, lots of guitar crunch, and NO HOOKS - nothing memorable except one or two tracks.  There's no "wouldn't cha?  Barracuda!"  There's no slithery Blues of "Breakdown."  These are just not memorable works in the scope of Petty or Heart's catalogs.  It just goes to show that the majors still can buy a "hit."  I'm sorry, but one great song per disc does not deserve rave reviews.  It also proves that we've been fed too much dissonant garbage since Kurt Cobain's strung out wail captured the imagination of the Rock press and mopey-headed dullards around the globe.

Eric Clapton continued to mine new territory by retreating to his roots.  He served up a disc of Jazzy Blues that was well recorded and he, like Petty and Heart, received great reviews and a fair amount of press.  Reality results?  There's not a bad track on the disc, but there is only a couple that might - and I emphasize might - make it onto a Best of Eric Clapton disc sometime in the future.

Steve Miller?  Now here's the real deal.  Miller hasn't released a disc of new music in years... not since 1993's Wide River.  And why not?  Because Miller has little to say these days and has virtually stopped writing songs.  But can he still play?  You're damn right he can.  This boy has never lost the goods and his chops soar into outer space on Bingo! - a collection of covers and new songs written by his friends and colleagues.  And you know what?  He released it on his own label, got ZERO press, and it turns out - Steve Miller's Bingo! is the most satisfying disc of the Classic Rock bunch.  Two nuggets mined from Jimmy Vaughan's 1997 release Strange Pleasure sound like they were written and tailored with Miller in mind.  And one listen to the fluid guitar solo in the Earl King standard "Come On (Let the Good Times Roll)" will have you convinced that Miller has never been away.  Do yourself a favor - buy this disc, and tell Rolling Stone to stop listening to Teeny Bop artists and remind them they need to get a grip on what is Rock 'n' Roll.

One last mention - Cottage Views #1 disc of 2010 - Peter Wolf - Midnight Souvenirs.  Open your ears and listen to it.  You'll know why it is #1.

"Killer Joe" Delia Debuts New Band and Music

Joe Delia is a man who wears many hats.  In an over 40 year career he has been the talent in the shadows that has enabled a diverse set ofJoe Delia.jpg (41402 bytes) performers, from Dusty Springfield to Grace Slick, Pat Benatar to Engelburt Humperdinck, Buster Poindexter to comedian Richard Belzer,  Jazz greats Stanley Turrentine, Freddie Hubbard, and Jim Hall, and even the Muppets, articulate their gifts for the world to relish.  In between scoring Feature Films and Soundtracks, Delia has always maintained a toe-hold on the pulse of Rock and Roll and is now leading a new band of horses to the water.  His latest venture, Thieves, is being widely hailed as a natural continuation of his acclaimed work Scene of the Crime that he co-produced with old pal Max Weinberg of the E Street Band.  Two singles, "Fire in My Belly" and "Montauk Moon," have been released preceding the CD and can now be downloaded at Amazon.com and iTunes.  A sampling of rave online reviews include, "Delia returns to his roots with his new band playing straight ahead rock and roll," "a groove that combines raw streetwise rock and roll with a hint of British Invasion," and "I remember when the Rolling Stones used to make tracks like this."  Thieves will once again take the stage with Richard Belzer at an exclusive show at the legendary Turning Point in NY on March 26.

Robbie Robertson readies first disc in over 10 Years  Former Band Songwriter/Guitarist Robbie Robertson will release his fifth solo album, How to Become Clairvoyant, in early April.  The 12 track disc features guitar-work from Eric Clapton and keyboard contributions from Steve Winwood.  The seldom heard from Robertson has stated that this is a return to his Rock 'n' Roll past and has sent out a single preview of the disc "When the Night was Young," which is a slow shuffle sung in a world-weary voice that looks back on youthful idealism.  Another track from the disc, "This is Where I get Off," deals with his decision to leave the Band in 1976.  The disc will be released on the 429 Records label, which is an imprint of the Savoy Label Group (SLG), Japan's oldest record company Columbia Music Entertainment (formerly Nippon Columbia).

Paul Simon:  April Come He Will    In what is being called a "return to his songwriting roots," Paul Simon is scheduled to release his 12th solo album this April.  "Since Graceland, I've always made the record based on either making the tracks or the percussion first.  This time the stimuli was a guitar in my lap," he said.  The disc, entitled So Beautiful or So What, is being produced by Phil Ramone who worked on Simon's early records.  But don't expect Simon to go as far back to his Singer/Songwriter days of Simon & Garfunkel - the new disc features percussion from Steve Shehan (who has worked with Peter Gabriel) and electronic drum parts from Chris Bear of Grizzly Bear fame.  In a recent press release Simon did say that he still desires to reunite with Garfunkel eventually.  At the moment, Art Garfunkel is recovering from vocal-cord paresis.  The disc was independently financed by Simon and will receive distribution from the Concord Record Group.

A Boomer Could Go Broke, or at least further into debt, with all of the box sets, limited edition collections, and interesting new releases hitting the market this season.  The biggest news has to be the Apple Records Box set that fans have been awaiting for years.

Apple Records was launched by The Beatles in 1968 as a new outlet for their own recordings as well as the music of an eclectic roster of artists that were personally signed by The Beatles, including James Taylor, Badfinger, Billy Preston, Mary Hopkin, and others that piqued their interest.  The Apple Records Box is an overview of what that label gave to the world.

Priced at just under $300, and on sale through certain internet sites (I got mine at Amazon for $197) The Apple Records Box contains 14 individual artist albums (with bonus tracks), the new Best of Apple Records - Come And Get It collection, a 2CD collection of 37 un-released tracks from Badfinger, Billy Preston, Jackie Lomax and Mary Hopkin, plus a 16 page booklet, all housed in a cardboard box that artistically replicates the original Apple Records crate.

Yes!  It is about time!

For Badfinger fans this is the mother load!!!!  Between the bonus tracks on No Dice and Straight Up, plus some of the songs on the bonus disc you can now compile what was intended as the original follow up album to No DiceAt this point there is very little still in the can, but a few tracks, and demos, still linger.

The Beatles:  Along with The Beatles music finally available for legal download comes the release of the re-mastered “Red (1962-1966)” and “Blue (1967-1970)” collections.  Nothing really new here except the liner notes and some rare photos, but nice to have them available as CDs, needless to say.

John Lennon:  The Lennon solo catalog has been re-mastered using the same process The Beatles catalog went through last year to bring out the top end of the sound spectrum.  The highlight of the campaign no doubt will be the striped down version of Double Fantasy a la Let it Be – Naked.  Honestly, this is the first time I’ve listened to Double Fantasy in many, many years and Stripped Down is enlightening to say the least, and well worth the price.  It is packaged as a double CD with John’s original mix of DF as the bonus, and at the price of a single disc.  Nice!  Also released are the new compilations Gimme Some Truth and Power to the People.  Gimme Some Truth is a 4 disc retrospective of John’s career that breaks down 72 of his tracks into themed CDs:  “Roots” – influences, “Working Class Hero” – socio-political, “Woman” – love, and “Borrowed Time” – life.  Power to the People is a single disc of 15 of John’s most popular songs.  Of course all of the tracks on both discs are from the recent 2010 remasterings that capture John’s original audio mixes.   For the complete-ist in you pick up Signature Box, an 11 CD set of Lennon’s work that spans from 1971-1984 and includes a 2 CD collection of rarities entitled Lennon Home Demos, a 65 page book, and a commemorative Lennon print.  The box includes all of his officially released solo discs, plus a disc of his singles and the before mentioned 2 discs of demos (predominantly from the Plastic Ono Band and Imagine sessions).  The box does not include John & Yoko’s experimental albums Two Virgins, Life with the Lions, Wedding Album, or Live Peace in Toronto and Double Fantasy Stripped Down.  Are you now beginning to see what I mean about going broke?

As a side note:  there is an amazingly well written review of Gimme Some Truth on Amazon.com that should be read by all Lennon fans.  It's the one by Red on Black from Cardiff.  Remember friends, go to Cottage Views Reviews Page and post your own reviews!

Paul McCartney&Wings - Band on the Run.jpg (39513 bytes) Paul McCartney:  Sir Paul seems to have finally wrestled his solo catalog out of the control of Capitol/EMI and the first of a series of planned re-mastered discs to be issued is the true Rock classic Band on the Run. Available now through Concord, Band on the Run is being reissued in 3 different packages:  as a single disc, 9 track, Standard Edition; as a 2 disc audio/1 DVD Special Edition set; and as a 3 CD audio/1 DVD audio Deluxe Edition.  The Special Edition contains the fabled film One Hand Clapping – a sort-of documentary of Band on the Run that was made after the record with drummer Geoff Briton, videos, and film footage of the famous album cover shoot.  The additional songs on the Special Edition are from the soundtrack of One Hand Clapping, plus the single sides "Helen Wheels", "Country Dreamer", and "Zoo Gang."  The Deluxe edition contains the audio documentary that was included in the 25th Anniversary Edition plus a 120 page hard bound book containing many unseen and unpublished photos by Linda McCartney and Clive Arrowsmith.  Band on the Run will also be issued as a double album on 180 Gram audiophile vinyl.  The vinyl edition will come with the bonus tracks on sides 3 and 4 and an MP3 download of all 18 tracks.

In literary form comes Fab:  An Intimate Life of Paul McCartney by author Howard Sounes, the man who gave us Down the Highway:  The Life of Bob Dylan.  Fab is billed as “the first exhaustive biography” to tell McCartney’s whole life story from childhood to present day.

George Harrison - All Things Must Pass.jpg (70996 bytes) George Harrison:  Out now for the diehard collector, and old school listener, is the 40th Anniversary Edition of All Things Must Pass on 180 Gram Vinyl.  The package faithfully replicates the original 3 LP set and is serial numbered and includes a full color poster.  Also released this season is Collaborations, an Amazon.com exclusive limited edition 3 CD set featuring the music of Ravi Shankar and George Harrison.  This package includes 3 CDs, 1 DVD, a numbered Certificate of Authenticity, and a 56 page hardbound book.  The music itself consists of the long out of print albums Chants of India (1997 – written by Ravi, produced by George), Music Festival From India (1976 – written by Ravi, produced by George), Shankar Family & Friends (1974 – the first joint recording between Ravi and George and consists of instrumentals and songs performed by Ravi, George, Ringo Starr, Billy Preston, Klaus Voorman and others.

Meanwhile, George's son Dhani Harrison and some famous friends (Ben Harper, Joseph Arthur, Jim Keltner) have recorded a disc under the banner Fistful of Mercy.  On the disc,  As I Call You Down, Harrison contributes a tune "Father's Son."

BOX SETS GALORE!

Sure to be a hit this season is the new boxed set from Jimi Hendrix - West Coast Seattle Boy, a 4 disc/1 DVD set that is the first to collect tracks from his entire career, including his work as a sideman to Little Richard, The Isley Brothers, King Curtis, and others.  The Darkness on the Edge of Town box set from Bruce Springsteen has been anticipated for quite some time and has finally seen the light of day.  The Deluxe Edition features a newly remastered Darkness, a 2 CD set containing 21 tracks that were recorded after Born To Run that didn't make the original Darkness album, an 80 page book, and 3 DVDs:  The Making of Darkness on the Edge of Town documentary; a recent concert performance of the entire Darkness album; and a disc of performances from the Darkness tour 1976-1978.  The Promise, a 2 disc set of the aforementioned 21 tunes can be purchased separately.  John Mellencamp also has a box out entitled On the Rural Route 7609 (4 discs) as well as a new studio album No Better Than This that was recorded in old school style in various famous American sound studios, including Memphis' Sun Studios.  No Better Than This was produced by the uber-busy T Bone Burnett.  A Vanilla Fudge retrospect, Box of Fudge, is a 4 disc collection - 2 of the discs are live recordings.  The re-issuance of Delaney & Bonnie and Friends - On Tour with Eric Clapton is now a 4 disc set containing 52 tracks, much of which has never before been released.  George Harrison makes a guest appearance.  Bob Dylan's first 8 LPs have now been remastered and reissued in mono and sold in one box entitled The Original Mono Recordings.  Dylan also has a 47 song/2 disc collection of demos out, The Bootleg Series, Vol. 9:  The Witmark Demos 1962-1964, which chronicle The Bard's transition from Folkie to Music Icon.  David Bowie's 1976 classic Station to Station has been given the upgrade and is now a 3 CD set that includes the previously unreleased - and heavily bootlegged - Live Nassau Coliseum '76 concert, and collectable postcards.  Moody Blues fans can rejoice, as founding member Ray Thomas' solo work has been compiled in a box From Mighty Oaks... ...Hopes, Wishes, and Dreams.  It is a 3 CD/1 DVD set and includes a rarities, a lavish booklet, and postcards.  The Who have released Live at Leeds for the third time.  This time out Live at Leeds - the 40th Anniversary Super Deluxe Collectors' Edition contains 4 CDs that capture the band in full swing not only on February 14, 1970 at Leeds, but also the February 15th show in Hull.  Also included is a 64 page book, a reissue of the original vinyl LP, a 7" single of "Summertime Blues" b/w "Heaven and Hell," and a poster.   And let us not forget that Eagle Records has just released a 2 disc set of The Who Live at the Isle of Wight Festival 1970 as well.  In other Who news, singer Roger Daltrey recently told the press that The Who are planning a new tour for 2011 and also dropped some hints about teaming up with Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page.  "I've always wanted to do something with Jimmy," he said.  "Mainly because, what the hell is he doing?  What an amazing waste of a talent.  He's a genius."

Get Yer Strawbs Fix!

Sandy and the Strawbs.JPG (179714 bytes)Several releases from the Strawbs front are now available, including the newly upgraded, remastered and expanded, Sandy Denny & the Strawbs - All our Own Work (the complete sessions), which includes previously unreleased demos and out-takes.  Of particular interest is an excellent psychedelic rendering of "Tell Me What You See in Me" with Sandy Denny singing lead.   The Daily Express hailed the recording, stating "many now think of this as the original Folk/Rock album."  Also be on the look out for Strawbs At the BBC Vol. 1 and Vol. 2Volume 1 is a single disc, while Volume 2 is a double.  The material captured on the BBC sessions spans from the late sixties to the 1974 lineup of the band.  Additionally, when the Strawbs celebrated their 40th anniversary a couple of years ago with a concert it was preserved for posterity.  Volume 1 of that festival has now been issued as Strawberry Fayre and is a double disc featuring all of the different incarnations of the band at various times, plus solo works from Dave Cousins as well as Dave Lambert's group Fire.  Speaking of Cousins, Dave has released his official lyric book Secrets, Stories, and Song.  The 380 + page book is illustrated, chock full of personal anecdotes, and includes a spoken word CD.

MORE RELEASES AND NEWS...

Blackmore's Night have just released their latest disc Autumn Sky, which includes a cover of The Kinks "Celluloid Heroes."  England's darling Paul Weller's latest is Wake Up the Nation, and it is getting spectacular reviews.  Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' Damn the Torpedoes has been re-issued and expanded to 2 discs and includes 7 previously unreleased tracks.  Heart's latest is Red Velvet CarElton John and Leon Russell have teamed up for the T Bone Burnett produced The Union, featuring guests Bernie Taupin, Booker T Jones, Neil Young, and former Beach Boy Brian Wilson.  Wilson's own latest is a tribute to days gone by, Reimaging Gershwin, and is exactly what it sounds like it could be - Gershwin tunes done up in Beach Boy fashion.  Eric Clapton has released his first new disc in several years, simply called Clapton.  A DVD of Crossroads 2010:  Eric Clapton Guitar Festival is not related to the new release, but footage of the benefit concert Clapton held earlier this year featuring Jeff Beck, Steve Winwood, Ronnie Wood, BB King, ZZ Top, and more.  Richard Thompson, now residing in California, has dropped Dream Attic, a collection of brand new songs recorded in front of a live audience in February of 2010.  A limited edition version of Dream Attic is available that adds a second disc of acoustic demos of the new songs.  80s Icon Cyndi Lauper returns with Memphis Blues, which features guests BB King and Allen Toussaint.  The Doobie Brothers keep rolling with World Gone Crazy.  A couple of highlights from the disc are a cooking remake of "Nobody," and a guest vocal from former Doobie Michael McDonald.  A deluxe version of World Gone Crazy is available that adds a DVD documentary of the band and a new video for "Nobody."  Veteran Jerry Lee Lewis is still showing 'em how it's done on his latest Mean Old Man with guests Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, and Eric ClaptonRobert Plant continues to mine his roots on Band of Joy.  Described as a continuation of the Grammy award winning collaboration with Alison Krauss and influenced by Led Zeppelin III, Plant said, "I'd always wanted to go back to the place that album captured."  The Pretenders' Chrissie Hynde has teamed up with Welsh singer/songwriter JP Jones for a disc of predominantly duets about their doomed relationship;  JP, Chrissie, and the Fairground Boys - Fidelity!  Diehard Fleetwood Mac complete-ists will want to pick up In London, a newly released vintage recording of the band fronted by Peter Green.  Also, an import Lindsey Buckingham and Little Big Town - Live in Nashville 2006 has just been released, as well as the ultra-rare Stevie Nicks - Live in Denver 1986.

A recording of interest is a new disc from "supergroup" Black Country Communion.  BCC, according to a press release, are the brain child of producer Kevin Shirley (who has worked with Led Zeppelin and Aerosmith).  The band consists of bassist/vocalist Glenn Hughs (Deep Purple/Trapeze), Blues-Rock guitarist Joe Bonamassa, drummer Jason Bonham (son of Zeppelin drummer John Bonham), and keyboardist Derek Sherinian (Dream Theater, Alice Cooper)

Rock ‘n’ Roll on DVD; The Rolling Stones and More

Keef in Exile.JPG (242365 bytes)Two new DVDs that capture the dark underbelly of Rock ‘n’ Roll are centered on the Rolling Stones, and are proof positive of why they have been dubbed the World’s Greatest Rock ‘n’ Roll Band.

The first, Stones in Exile, smartly kept to a 60 minute documentary, is a behind the scenes making of the Rolling Stones masterwork Exile on Main Street.  Having been forced to flee their native England in the very early seventies to avoid the taxman the Stones convened in the south of France for a very long party that occasionally resulted in some of the greatest music they would ever produce.

With the close of the sixties, and The Beatles disbanded, the Rolling Stones usurped the seventies shattering any remaining hopes or dreams of idealism and innocence.  The film not only depicts a particular moment in history but also captures the decadence of a band of outlaws that were truly on the run from the long arm of the law.

Mick in Exile.JPG (184829 bytes)Stones in Exile also dispels the myth that Mick Jagger is totally in charge of this freewheeling circus, and shows Keith Richards as the driving force of the group.  With new interviews from all members, past and present, the film shows that Mick and Keith were not holed up in a sweaty basement making music every day as was widely rumored.  Jagger and his very pregnant then-wife Bianca were in fact in Paris for much of the time while Keith pursued his muses – a trio of drugs, music and fatherhood.  Guitarist Mick Taylor, who was relatively new to the band at that time, appears rather unaffected by the decadence surrounding him and gives voice to Keith’s ideas while the rhythm section of Bill Wyman and Charlie Watts made their dutiful appearances.  It was a strange time for the Rolling Stones and it is a miracle that they lived through it, did not go to jail, and needless to say continued on as a band.

The other film, Ladies and Gentlemen – The Rolling Stones is really where all of the sweat that went into making Exile pays off.  Filmed over four nights in Texas on the Exile on Main Street tour, Ladies and Gentlemen is a concert film that is as riveting today as it must have been to be in the front row then.  And here is where Mick Jagger shows his worth.  As frontman, he is a jumping, strutting, cock-sure rooster that completely owns the stage, conjuring a spell that few Rock Stars can produce.  The band is rock solid and fireworks spill forth, especially from Mick Taylor’s guitar.  Watching this film you can totally understand why Richards recently stated that if were up to him Taylor would still be in the band today.    Both the sound and vision on this disc have been meticulously remastered and the results are top notch.  Ladies and Gentlemen is extremely Rolling Stones - Ladies and Gentlemen.JPG (263679 bytes) satisfying for any Rock music fan, and Stones freaks will be hard pressed to decide which parts to watch over and over again.  Just some of the highlights are the semi-acoustic set of “Sweet Virginia” and “You can’t always get what you Want” and the bonus videos of the Stones rehearsing, including the rare instrumental “Bluesberry Jam” that shows Keef’s chops as a Blues guitarist.

Both of these discs are presented by Eagle Records/Eagle Vision, one of the largest independent companies in the UK who have been fighting the good fight to keep quality Rock ‘n’ Roll alive by investing in heritage artists and releasing new records and archival audio and video.  In the past six months alone they have been responsible for Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood’s new solo album (see more below), When you’re Strange – A Film about The Doors that is narrated by Johnny Depp, and the definitive authorized story/film of Black Sabbath’s Paranoid with contributions from all four original members of the band.  Other releases include An Evening with Frank Zappa during which… The Torture Never Stops – the 1981 Halloween concert filmed at New York’s Palladium; Heaven & Hell:  Neon Nights (available as CD and DVD) – capturing the late Ronnie James Dio, drummer Vinny Apice, and Black Sabbath’s Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler at the Wacken Open Air Festival on July 30, 2009; Classic Albums video documentary of RUSH:  2112 & Moving Pictures; Electric Light Orchestra – Live:  The Early Years – featuring the Jeff Lynne fronted lineup of the band; Rory Gallagher The Beat Club Sessions CD and Ghost Blues – a double DVD telling the Story of Rory Gallagher;  The Everly Brothers – Reunion Concert at the Royal Albert Hall (September 1983); Nils Lofgren:  Cry Tough (2 DVD) – capturing the guitarist (Neil Young’s Crazy Horse, Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band) in the spotlight over three performances – promoting Silver Lining in 1991, a show from 1979, and a set from 1976 just after the release of his critically-acclaimed solo debut;  Jackson Browne:  Going Home – a reissue of the documentary/concert performance 1999 home video that includes contributions from CSN, Bonnie Raitt, and members of the Eagles;  a re-issue of the Koch Records 2001 collection Ringo Starr and his All Starr Band The Anthology… So Far (3 CDs); Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers:  Damn the Torpedoes (Classic Albums DVD);  Twisted Sister Live in Wacken-The Reunion (DVD and CD); and The Bee Gees:  In our own Time (DVD) a documentary spanning their entire 50 year career in show business.

Phil Collins - Going Back.JPG (276876 bytes)One release sure to catch curiosity seekers’ attention is Phil Collins:  Going Back (Eagle Vision DVD/Atlantic CD).  When I first heard that former Prog-Rocker-turned-Schlock-Meister Phil Collins had returned to recording and performing my head cocked with one eyebrow lifted in an expression of “what…?”  Love him or hate him, Phil Collins has had a lengthy career with enough success to stare down the baddest of the bad; he lifted his first group out of Prog-Rock obscurity at a time when the music world were ready to condemn the art form simply out the necessity to change and into chart topping territory, racked up millions of sales as a solo artist and producer, scored musical moments for Disney, and re-interpreted Soul music for white-bread America.  On Going Back Collins returns to the music that moved him when he was young – the single sides of Motown and Stax with some startling results.  It really is hard to imagine that this is the same musician who laid down the slamming drums of “In the Air Tonight,” the dark, mysterious vocalist of Genesis’ “Mama,” or the tough Rock singer of “No Son of Mine.”  Now approaching age 60, Collins has mellowed into a dark suited entertainer with a ready for Vegas act, complete with a few of the original Funk Brothers in tow.  This may not be Smokey, the Temps, or the 4 Tops, but for better or worse upon listening to these well executed tunes you begin to realize that unless someone like Phil Collins does this kind of stuff we are never going to get to see or hear these truly American Classic songs performed in a live setting with a band of top notch musicians, and this genre of music can easily slip into darkness through apathy and the pursuit of progress.  To his credit, on the DVD, Collins keeps the tunes coming without much chat in between songs.  He is here to entertain us, and entertain he does.  You can deny it if you like, but for most of us Phil Collins is a guilty pleasure.  So, lighten up, get your groove on, and shake your boney butt a bit.  Thanks Phil, and merry Christmas.

Ronnie Wood - I Feel like Playing.JPG (284296 bytes)FACE MAN Ronnie Wood has stayed out of the gossip columns long enough now to record his latest disc, I Feel Like Playing, for the Eagle Records label.  The 7th Studio album from the Rolling Stone guitarist features guest appearances from ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons, Kris Kristofferson, Jim Keltner, Slash, Flea, Eddie Vedder, and others.  In related news, Ronnie Wood and Kenny Jones reunited as The Faces this past August with Simply Red's Mick Hucknall standing in for Rod Stewart, and Sex Pistols' Glen Matlock taking over bass chores for the late Ronnie Lane.  Additional rhythm guitar parts were provided by Wood's son Jessie.  "We do miss Rod," said Wood, "but having Mick here is just unbelievable.  It's one of those situations that you probably think wouldn't work, but it's magic."  There is no word if the group will record, but Wood added, "We could throw something together easily and quickly like we always did.  It's all up in the air."

Ringo Celebrates in Style  (July 7, 2010) Just in case you missed it, Ringo celebrated his 70th birthday at Radio City Music Hall in New York City with a blow out concert featuring his latest All Starr line up.  Ringo - Live at the Greek 08.JPG (214841 bytes)A host of famous friends, including Yoko Ono, Jeff Lynne, Little Steven Van Zandt, Joe Walsh, and Dave Stewart, joined him for an encore of "A Little Help From My Friends," but the real historic moment was when fellow Beatle Paul McCartney joined him onstage for a rousing version of “Birthday.”  Sure to have been filmed for future release we will have to make do with Ringo’s latest release Live at the Greek Theatre 2008.  The CD of that show is sold separately from the DVD, and here’s why both are worth picking up; 1. most can’t play a DVD in their car without being driving off into a ditch, 2. The DVD includes a lot more songs, specifically “Memphis In Your Mind,” “Lonely is the Night” (Billy Squire – vocals), “Down Under” (Colin Hay – vocals), “Liverpool 8” (Ringo – vocals), “Frankenstein” (Edgar Winter), “Choose Love” (Ringo – vocals), “Work to Do” (Hamish Stuart), and “Love is Alive” (Gary Wright – vocals).

we were there!

NEW RELEASES (Summer 2010)   This season promises to be ripe with sweet berries from the Classic Rock bunch... Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers - Mojo, Peter Wolf (ex-J Geils Band) - Midnight Souvenirs, Peter Frampton - Thank You Mr. Churchill, Asia - Omega, Carole King & James Taylor - Live at the Troubadour, Jakob Dylan - Women and Country, Natalie Merchant - Leave Your Sleep (2 discs), Paul Weller - Wake Up the Nation, Melissa Etheridge - Fearless Love, and the biggest news; Steve Miller Band - Bingo! (first studio disc in FOREVER!).  Also don't forget to pick up the new Deluxe Edition of Exile on Main Street from the Rolling Stones.

On the DVD front Eagle Rock Entertainment keeps pumping out the good stuff with The Doors "When You're Strange," a documentary by award-winning writer/director Tom DiCillo and narrated by none other than Johnny Depp, and Black Sabbath:  Classic Albums - Paranoid the story behind the creation of historic tracks such as "Iron Man" and "War Pigs" with interviews from all four original members of the band (Ozzy, Iommi, Geezer, and Ward for those who forgot!)

Macca yanked his catalog from EMI, who have been up for sale and in financial jeopardy for years now.  Most of Paul McCartney's post Beatles recording legacy is now available through Concord Records (who also scooped up the ailing Rounder Records).  Let's hope that they dig into the archives and start releasing some of those longed for gems that have been bootlegged for years.

File this one under Dr. Strange...  Double Feature, the movie company who gave us Pulp Fiction, is now looking at producing Paul is Undead:  The British Zombie Invasion - a big screen adaptation of the Alan Goldsher book where all four Beatles come back to life as zombies and feed on the brains of Beatlemaniacs.  Archenemy, zombie killer, and hero of the film is Mick Jagger (of course).

YOSO is a new "supergroup" assembled by ex-Toto singer Bobby Kimball and former Yes-men Tony Kaye (keys) and Billy Sherwood (bass/producer) with newcomers Jimmy Cortez on drums and Jimmy Haun on guitar.  Look for their debut this summer.

FREE, STONES, GARY MOORE DVDS    Last month Eagle Rock Entertainment quietly slipped out a 2 disc set of vintage Free performances for the DVD market.  Several years in the making many of these clips are being shown for the first time in decades.  Disc one captures a young Paul Rodgers fronting the influential group that would eventually morph into the wildly successful Bad Company, and offers archival footage, interviews, and television performances.  Disc two contains audio and video of the band at their peak, performing live at the Isle of Wight in 1970 (one of Rock’s most spectacular festivals wherein Free shared the bill with Jimi Hendrix and The Doors).  Included in the package are excellent liner notes and a reproduction of the love letter Paul Rogers wrote for his late band-mate, guitarist Paul Kossoff.

In other Eagle Rock Entertainment news, the company announced a DVD release, entitled Stones In Exile, to coincide with the reissue of the Rolling Stones masterpiece Exile on Main Street.  Stones In Exile, a documentary film of the making of the classic album, promises to include “substantial bonus material” that will not be included in the BBC television airing that is scheduled for late May.  Additionally, ERE has secured the rights to release a fully restored-from-original-film version of Ladies and Gentlemen: The Rolling Stones, the legendary concert film from 1972.  The DVD will be released just after the film hits select cinemas nationally this summer, with a HD/Blu Ray version to hit shelves in the autumn of 2010.

Also look for a 2 DVD/CD set of highlights from Gary Moore’s performances in Montreaux from ERE.   The set captures the former Thin Lizzy/Colosseum II guitarist in action between 1990 and 2001.

Really Old News

Seasons Greetings from Cottage Views:  Music Reviews/Last Minute Shopping Ideas (Dec 2009)

Here we are in the thick of the gift giving season, and just in case you’ve run out of ideas Cottage Views has some reviews and last minute recommendations for you!

In case you missed him, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee, Seventies singer/songwriter, Jimi Hendrix guitar-hero collaborator, and co-founder of Traffic, Dave Mason has returned with his first album of all new songs in almost 2 decades (26 Letters~12 Notes on Out of the Box Records).  This 12 track disc sizzles with great songs and great playing.  Dave’s voice has never left him and his guitar chops are better than ever.  One listen to cuts like “Passing Thru the Flame” and “One Day” and you’ll know this one is a keeper.  P.S.  Don’t miss the salacious Sheila E assisted “That’s Love” where Mason beats Prince at his own game.

The other top recommendation is the Strawbs latest, entitled Dancing to the Devil’s Beat (Witchwood Records).  Celebrating 40 years as recording stars this Seventies chameleon-like powerhouse has put together a disc so brilliant that from start to finish you would think they had travelled back in time, captured their old muse, and held her for a hefty ransom.  Original keyboard player Rick Wakeman, who left the Strawbs to join Yes back in the day, is now replaced by his son Oliver who has his father’s sensibility and dexterous touch.  It’s all here; Dave Cousin’s image laden poetry, Dave Lambert’s savage guitar work, riveting rhythms, Classical piano flourishes, swirling organs, ancient sounding plucked banjo accents, and layered harmonies right out of the Church of England.   Put on the headphones and drop the needle on (um… I mean, cue the CD player to) “Where Silent Shadows Fall” and wait for the crescendo – it’s 1970 all over again.

Finally, forget John Mayer and Jack White.  If you are looking for the next young guitar hot-shot then pick up Davy Knowles & Back Door Slam’s sophomore disc Coming Up For Air (Blix Street Records).  Produced by none other than Peter Frampton, this guy gives new meaning to the over-used term ‘shred.’  I picked up this disc after hearing one track and I have not been disappointed in the least bit.  Knowles’ guitar work on the track “Tear Down the Walls” is straight-forward and gut wrenching.  His rendition of “Hear Me Lord” brings the tune back to George Harrison’s original intention of white-boy Blues and Gospel and then blows it to the sky.  And don’t miss the final cut “Taste of Danger,” with a guest vocal from the Story’s Jonatha Brooke.  Absolutely fabulous!

A couple of discs that came out last year around this time of the season that are worthy of re-investigation are the Keith Reid Project – The Common Thread and Oasis’s Dig out your Soul.  On first listen the Oasis disc didn’t offer much other than a retread of sixties riffs stolen from John Lennon, The Doors, and the Stones circa Satanic Majesties, but after listening to it again it proved to be the most consistent album in their catalog.  What was needed at the time was a little editing and a revision of the songs’ order.  As for the Keith Reid disc – well, I can’t keep it out of my player.  Great music, terrific lyrics, wonderful singers.  Check out the one hour Rock-u-mentary I produced for Rockland World Radio and test the tunes for yourself.  You won’t be sorry you did.

After seeing Blackmore’s Night in NYC this past Halloween I have also gone back to re-evaluate their latest disc Secret Voyage.  It seems that Candice Night’s voice has finally grown into her vision of Contemporary Renaissance Stevie Nicks Sex Symbol Rock Chick and she’s laid down the law with her husband (“everyone’s favorite man in tights”) Ritchie Blackmore.  To see them obviously having fun on stage was a far departure from Blackmore’s old Deep Purple/Rainbow days and the playing is really top notch.  Do yourself a favor and check out “Locked within the Crystal Ball” on You Tube and you’ll know exactly what I mean.  And don’t miss “Peasants Promise” on the disc.  It combines everything that Blackmore’s Night has been striving for over the past ten years.

Okay, that’s about it – other than to give you my top ten of the year and to wish you the best holiday ever.  Cheers!  Michael

HEADLINES

Annie Haslam's Xmas II  Sometimes front-woman for Renaissance, Annie Haslam has released her second collection of seasonal tunes, entitled Snowball.  Each disc is numbered and signed and a very limited supply are available.  For more info contact the White Dove Organization at whtdoveorg@aol.com.

Julian Lennon set to release new disc in 2010  "There's only so much bitterness and anger one can carry in life without it taking you to the grave," he said, recently discussing the pain he carried for many years after the death of his father Beatle John Lennon.  "One has to reach a point of forgiveness, and I'd done that but hadn't really taken it to heart for a long time.  It's only in recent years - and probably partially through the writing of this album."  Entitled Everything Changes, the disc will contain the song "Lucy" which was written for his childhood friend Lucy Vodden who was the inspiration of the portrait Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds that the elder Lennon turned into popular song.  Vodden passed away of Lupus earlier this year.  A portion of the profits of the tune will go to Lupus research.  Purchase the song here.  Meanwhile, half-brother Sean Lennon has released Rosencrantz & Guildenstern are Undead, an instrumental score to the low-budget vampire flick, and surviving Beatles Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr have teamed up on a couple of tracks that will be released on Ringo's upcoming disc, scheduled to be released early in the new year.  McCartney has also contributed a new song, "(I Want to) Come Home," to the new Robert DeNiro flick Everybody's Fine.

Little Feat's Richie Hayward battling Cancer  Founding member, and drummer for, Little Feat Richie Hayward has been diagnosed with liver cancer taking him off the current tour and into treatment.  Temporarily replacing Hayward on the tour is drum tech Gabe Ford.  In a statement released by Hayward on the band's official website he said, "Your love and support will mean a lot to me.  I love and will miss you all, and I will see you again on the proud highway."

Quoting Joan Jett  In the latest edition of Esquire Magazine Joan Jett stated "They've turned the word rock into nothing.  It's a meaningless word.  "It rocks." "That food rocks." "She's rocking in that outfit." They've taken the word and stripped it of all its menace, of all its dirt, of all its sex."  Well said, Ms. Jett.

Tori's Holiday Greeting  Etherial temptress Tori Amos will release Midwinter Graces, her first full length holiday disc/DVD combo in November.

Joe Perry of Aerosmith is readying his latest solo album while the group is sidelined due to singer Steven Tyler's shoulder injury.  The disc reportedly will carry a cover of the Fleetwood Mac track "Somebody's Gonna Get their Head kicked in Tonight," and features vocals from Perry and a newcomer who simply goes by the name of Hagen.

Bob Dylan 2009.JPG (38435 bytes)In a Simple Twist of Fate Bob Dylan has recorded a disc of traditional Christmas tunes and is handing over his royalties from the disc to Feeding America, an organization that sets up food banks and soup kitchens to needy Americans.  Expect it in stores in mid-October.

Rock Icons Still Working  Thankfully, Mick & Kieth and Pete & Roger are still at it.  The Rolling Stones camp announced that Mick Jagger and Keith Richards are sorting through out-takes of their classic Exile On Main Street with the intention of releasing a deluxe boxed set of the sessions.  In other Stones news, Keith says he wants the band back in the studio for another disc of new material and a follow up tour.  Drummer Charlie Watts is having none of it and said it's time to hang up his tour sticks.  No word on if he'll participate on the record.  Meanwhile, Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey of The Who have been laying down tracks for what Townshend said will be another Rock Opera entitled FLOSS.  While Townshend finishes the writing and demoing stages of the project Daltrey will hit the road for a solo tour, his first since 1994.

Beatles - Let it Be 2.jpg (418952 bytes)Sept. 9, 2009  THE BEATLES ARE BACK  Today's the day, my friends, that the long awaited Beatles catalog is re-released with a sonic upgrade.  You know what to do...  go out and stimulate the economy!

Classic Joe Jackson  Recordings Joe Jackson made for the BBC between 1979 and 1983 have finally been released.  The new 2 CD set includes versions of his big hits "Is She Really Going Out With Him," "Steppin' Out," and "I'm the Man."  Have no fear, early rave-ups like "One More Time," "Look Sharp!" and "Happy Loving Couples" are included.

Man Overboard!  On July 21 Ian Hunter released his 13th solo album, Man Overboard.  Recorded with the Rant Band, which includes guitar-ace Andy York (John Mellencamp), drummer Steve Holley (Wings, Joe Cocker), bassist Paul Page (Dion), and guitarists Jack Petruzzelli (Joan Osborne) and James Mastro (Patti Smith).  About the sessions Hunter said, "When we did Shrunken Heads I felt like we had a good thing going so I wanted to revisit the experience before anything changed."  The 11 track set was produced by York.

Summer Listening  Following in the steps of Rod the Mod, American institution Tower of Power have recently unleashed their first installment of The Great American Soulbook.  The 12 track disc, issued on their own label, features red hot smoking versions of mostly 60s hits made famous by Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding, Aretha, and (of course) James Brown.  Dave Moore of Sam & Dave, Tom Jones, British songstress Josh Stone, and the “keeping the low profile” Huey Lewis all make guest appearances to make this the party hit of the summer.

Hard Rockin'  A new "super-group" comprised of Sammy Hagar, Michael Anthony (ex of Van Halen), Joe Satriani, and drummer Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers) have released their self-titled debut Chickenfoot.  The disc has already moved over 100,000 copies in its first week.

June 25, 2009

R.I.P.  I actually started this piece this afternoon after reading about the passing of Sky Saxon, the front man from 60's garage rockers the Seeds, worried that Cottage Views would become the obituary column for old Rock Stars, and then the bomb dropped about Michael Jackson's fatal heart attack.  I do not wish to exclude anyone, or leave anyone out from oversight, so... to all our fallen heroes, and there seems to be way too many these days, but such is the circle of life.  Cheers to the memories of Sky, Michael, singer/songwriters Kenny Rankin and John Martyn, Ronette Estelle Bennett, Muscle Shoals' Barry Beckett, Lynryd Skynyrd's Ean Evans and Billy Powell, Buffalo Springfield's Dewey Martin, the Venture's Bob Bogle, Soft Machine's Hugh Hopper, Blues legend Koko Taylor, Funk Brother Uriel Jones, ELO's Kelly Groucutt, the Stooges' Ron Ashton...

June 21, 2009

Cottage Views Senior Editor just got in from the Luka Bloom concert and can't remember the last time he was so blown away by a solo performer.  He opened with "I am no at War with Anyone."  Go away war planes/You bring fear and shame/This rush to war was wrong/I just sing my song/I am not at war with anyone.

Men At Work Going to Court  The owner of the Children's song "Kookaburra" claims that Colin Hay and Ron Strykert (who wrote the hit tune "Down Under") plagiarized the flute riff from them.  They WILL be going to court.

Woodstock's 40th Anniversary

Woodstock - original sountrack.JPG (79411 bytes)Free love, free music, Free-dom… it was all free and easy for the hippies back in 1969 when the original Woodstock Music and Arts Festival was held on the now sacred land of Yasgur’s Farm, where the Time Warner Cable sponsored Bethel Woods Center for the Arts currently resides.  Just don’t let that “free” tag fool you, as the freedom loving masses-turned-entrepreneurs bring you the 40th anniversary celebration of that beloved gathering of freaks and music.

Don’t get me wrong.  I absolutely love the ideal, and the music, and the fact that the festival produced zero violence (with the exception of a lot of brain cells getting killed), but you want to talk about cashing in?  Over the next two months the marketplace will be flooded with authorized Woodstock 40th Anniversary products for consumers to devour until their hearts delight.  A quick search on Amazon’s web site produced 45 variations of DVDs related to the festival, 315 separate CD titles, 589 varying T shirts, apparel, or accessories, and a whopping 34,327 different books!

So what is a baby-booming, nostalgic-seeking, red-blooded American-trying-to-stimulate-the-economy soon-to-be-post-recession consumer to do?   Read More Here  (there is a lot of stuff, so this report gets its own page)

Rolling Stones Reissues

Universal Music has just reissued four key discs from the Rolling Stones catalog.  While Some Girls, Emotional Rescue, Tattoo You, and Undercover all sport newly remastered sound that’s all you get folks.  Don’t expect any bonus tracks or revelations here.  Who was the corporate sludge that made that decision?

John Fogerty Rides Again

36 years later, Former CCR front-man John Fogerty will release a follow up to his album of covers, The Blue Ridge Rangers.  The new disc BRR Rides Again will feature Fogerty’s take on Delaney and Bonnie’s “Never Ending Song of Love,” as well as a duet with Bruce Springsteen on the Everly Brothers classic “When will I be Loved?” and a version of Ricky Nelson’s “Garden Party” that features guest vocals from Eagles Don Henley and Timothy B. Schmit.

Cat, Macca, Klaus Record   Yusuf (a.k.a. Cat Stevens) was locked up in a London studio recording songs for his follow-up to the excellent (and undeservedly overlooked) An Other Cup.  Out now, the disc entitled Roadsinger, is a eleven track return to his roots with the old Cat Stevens sound intact.    The first single, "Boots and Sand," was completed (with Paul McCartney and Dolly Parton on vocals) and a video for it shot in the California desert.  For some strange reason the song was left off of the new disc, but can be found as a download.  The quality of the disc is indeed very high, with lyrics relating to his personal trials and tribulations as well as that of the world's, but falls short in the fact that it clocks in at less than 40 minutes.  In related news, Yusuf has contributed to bassist/artist Klaus Voorman's new disc, The Sideman's Journey - a charity disc in aid of the Oglala Sioux Indian Reservation in South Dakota.  Yusuf contributes vocals and 12 String guitar to two George Harrison compositions for the disc, "All Things Must Pass" and "The Day the World Gets 'Round." The later is already available via download with proceeds going to Save The Children and the United Nations Relief and Works Agency.  On his website, Yusuf said, "This song represents for me the great spirit of George Harrison.  I hope this song will help remind people of the immense legacy of peace, love, and happiness we can share when we get 'round to looking at mankind's futile wars and prejudices, and start to change our foolish ways."

April 2009

The Bangles Return  80s Power-Pop priestesses The Bangles (now officially a trio - Susanna Hoffs, Debbi & Vicki Peterson) are reportedly in the studio working on a new album for 2009.  Additionally, a couple of their splinter projects are underway with guitarist Vicki Peterson teaming up with Susan Cowsill and Peter Holsapple once again for a Continental Drifters show as part of this year's Jazzfest in New Orleans, and Susannah Hoffs joining Matthew Sweet for the second helping of Under The Covers.  While the disc is not slated for release until late July, 16 tracks for Under the Covers, Vol. 2 have already been recorded.  Guests include Dhani Harrison, the son of the late great Beatle George, on a version of his father's "Beware of Darkness," Steve Howe on Yes' "I've Seen All Good People," and Fleetwood Mac's Lindsey Buckingham on "Second Hand News."  Other tracks recorded by the duo are Todd Rundgren's "Hello, It's Me," Carly Simon's "You're So Vain," and the Raspberries "Go All the Way."

Now when are they going to record a Badfinger song?!!

Frampton-Fony  Apparantely there is an imposter on Facebook that claims he is Peter Frampton.  Please be aware that the one in question may not be the real Peter Frampton, and you may not want him to be your friend.  Meanwhile, the real Frampton will be on tour this summer.  Go to www.Frampton.com for more details.

February 2009

Grammys Step it Up  Congratulations to all of the 51st Annual Grammy Award winners.  For the first time in a very long time I am happy to report that the televised Grammy ceremonies were not about entertainment but truly about music.  It seems they finally have reverted back to showcasing honest, talented, singers, songwriters, and musicians.  The biggest award, Album of the Year, went to Robert Plant & Alison Krauss for Raising Sand.  The duo also picked up an award for Record of the Year ("Please Read the Letter" - co-written with Zep's Jimmy Page), Best Contemporary Folk/Americana Album, Best Country Collaboration, and Best Pop Collaboration (the advance single from the album "Gone, Gone, Gone" won a Grammy last year), while Coldplay took Best Rock Album as well as Song of the Year with the title track of their latest release Viva La Vida.  Although I was disappointed that two of my favorite songs of this past year didn't win (Paul McCartney - "That Was Me" [nominated for Best Male Pop Vocal], Eagles - "Waiting in the Weeds" [nominated for Best Pop performance by duo or group]) at least they didn't lose to some fabricated money machine.  They lost to John Mayer and Coldplay respectively.   Mayer also picked up the Grammy for Best Rock Vocal Male, and Bruce Springsteen picked up the award for Best Rock Song ("Girls in their Summer Clothes").  The Eagles did pick up one Grammy, for Best Pop Instrumental for "I Dreamed there was No War," but lost for Best Pop Vocal Album to newcomer DuffyKings of Leon took the Grammy for Best Rock Performance and guitarist Dweezil Zappa took Best Rock Instrumental for his interpretation of his late father's "Peaches en Regalia" that was recorded with the help of Steve Vai, Terry Bozzio, and original Mothers of Invention saxophonist Napoleon Murphy Brock.  Finally, a couple of Rock's forefathers were celebrated with Grammys:  B. B. King - Best Traditional Blues Album, and Pete Seeger - Best Traditional Folk Album, and Dr. John took one home for Best Contemporary Blues Recording.  Congratulations to all once again, and congratulations to the Grammys for finally getting their priorities straight.

Sidebar  As for all the hoopla about Chris Brown being unable to attend because of his arrest - who cares?  I for one was happy that I got to see Al Green duet with Justin Timberlake.  And the big deal about M.I.A. appearing with the "Rap Pack" on the day her child was due is national headlines?  In reality: 1.  I didn't think it was the smartest thing she could have done, 2.  Her outfit was ridiculous, and 3.  The "Rap Pack" was the worst performance of the night.  Hey, this is my opinion - I could be wrong.

Willie Nile Keeps Rockin'  New York singer/songwriter Willie Nile is set to unleash his studio follow-up to 2006's outstanding Streets of New York.  Entitled House of a Thousand Guitars, the disc is already mixed and pre-orders are being taken at www.WillieNile.com where you can also purchase limited edition merchandise and hand signed discs.  Talk on the street is that this is the highlight so far in Willie's recording career.

More information and an exclusive interview with Willie Nile can be read by clicking here.

"Just thought you'd like to know the Mott the Hoople reunion IS going
to take place on October 2nd & 3rd, 2009 at the HMV Hammersmith Apollo
in London . It will be the original members - Mick, Pete, Phally, Buff
and me. They've asked our esteemed webmaster, Justin, to formulate a
Mott the Hoople site which should be up and running in the near future.
Why are we doing it? I can't speak for the others, but I'm doing it
just to see what it's like. Short of war, death, famine etc. ...it's
ON."

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame  Today the 2009 nominees were announced, prompting me to send the following letter to them...

Dear Rock and Roll Hall of Fame,

How can you expect real music people to sponsor and support you when you consistently ignore important musicians from the golden era of Rock 'n' Roll and continue to nominate entertainers who have very little to do with Rock?  In the past it was Grand Master Flash (questionable).  Last year it was Madonna (just because she owns a Les Paul doesn't mean she is Les Paul).  This year it is Run DMC (one jam does not make a Rock band).

What happened to Peter Frampton/Humble Pie, Badfinger, Dave Mason, or any of the progressive bands like The Nice, ELP, Yes, Moody Blues, King Crimson, etc.?  Those bands consist of real musicians and songwriters who pushed the envelope of Rock 'n' Roll to a new and exciting dimension.  And if memory serves me correctly, I don't believe you have ever inducted Eddie Cochran or Dale Hawkins, or Fairport Convention, or Vanilla Fudge, or Johnny Winter, or even the Doobie Brothers.

These omissions lead me to believe that the inductees are voted for by the accountants who receive the checks from record companies who stand to gain from the publicity instead of working musicians who devote their lives and talent to crafting lasting music.  I'll start paying attention again when you decide to start opening your ears instead of your pockets.

Sincerely,
Michael A. Cimino

Strawbs Tour with O. Wakeman  Following their current acoustic tour, the electric lineup of the Strawbs will return with Oliver Wakeman replacing John Hawken on keyboards (see Oct. '08 article below).  Oliver is the son of original Strawbs keyboard wiz, and Yes superstar, Rick Wakeman.  The band have already booked dates in Canada in March with dates in the UK and Italy in May.  Meanwhile, Rick continues his rehearsals for the upcoming Six Wives of Henry VIII Tour (see below).  Erstwhile Strawb Brian Willoughby and girlfriend Catherine Craig have a new album in the works and are currently on tour.  "Rejected Lover," a video of a duet between Catherine and Mary Hopkin (with Brian on lead guitar) can now be seen online by clicking here.  For announced tour dates go to the Strawbs official website.

Rick Wakeman & the Six Wives  Keyboard wizard Rick Wakeman (Yes, Strawbs) has announced that he will perform The Six Wives of Henry VIII on May 1-2, 2009 with an extended band, orchestra, choir, and narrator.  The concerts will be held at Hampton Court Palace in London and will most likely be filmed and recorded for posterity.  Wakeman has also written three new compositions for the evening, entitled "Tudor Overture," "Defender of the Faith," and "Tudor Rock."  The Six Wives of Henry VIII has sold in excess of 15 million copies since its release in 1972.

Delaney Bramlett RIP  Singer/Songwriter Delaney Bramlett, who worked with superstars Eric Clapton and George Harrison amongst others, passed away Saturday, Dec. 27, from complications following gallbladder surgery.  He was 69.  Throughout his career Bramlett wrote songs that went on to success for many artists, including the million seller "Superstar" for the Carpenters, "Let it Rain" (Clapton),  and "Never Ending Song of Love" (Ray Charles).  His own recordings with then wife Bonnie (an ex-Ikette) are considered classics in many circles, the most popular being On Tour with Eric Clapton (#29, 1970).  His most recent recording was A New Kind of Blues, released on the independent label Magnolia Gold.

Apple Legacy Continues  Apple Records collectors will be pleased to be informed that the third (and final) installment of Apple Publishing demos has been released.  Entitled Treacle Toffee World, the disc contains rare tracks from Fire (featuring future Strawbs guitarist Dave Lambert), The Iveys, and Grapefruit among others.  Additionally, former Apple Records star Mary Hopkin has opened the archives and released a Christmas single, entitled Snowed Under.  Bonus tracks on the disc include the long out of print songs "Mary had a Baby" and "Cherry Tree Carol," both originally released in 1972.  Hopkin's official website, www.MaryHopkin.co.uk, also has set up a label Mary Hopkin Music which offers previously unreleased recordings, including Live at the Royal Festival Hall 1972, Valentine, and Recollections.  Paul McCartney announced plans to issue The Beatles' 14 minute experimental track "Carnival of Light" that was recorded at the beginning of the Sgt. Pepper sessions.  Meanwhile, McCartney has teamed up with Youth once again and released another disc under the alias Fireman.  The new disc, Electric Arguments, has been receiving rave reviews in the UK (read review here).  It is the first time the duo have recorded together in 10 years and the first to include full on vocals.  Dhani Harrison, the son of the late George Harrison, has released his first proper studio disc, entitled You are Here, under the allonym Thenewno2.  The disc was recorded with musician Oli Hecks at Harrison's Friar Park, where his famous father recorded several classics.

Dennis Yost of the Classics IV Singer Dennis Yost passed away of respiratory failure on December 7.  He was 65. Yost, famous for the hits "Spooky," "Stormy," and "Traces of Love," had been in and out of nursing homes since 2005 due to a brain injury he received in a fall.  Band-mate and producer Buddy Buie publicly stated, "Dennis had an incredible voice.  I am deeply saddened by his passing."

November 2008

Mitch Mitchell RIP  The sole surviving member of the Jimi Hendrix Experience has passed away.  John "Mitch" Mitchell died of natural causes on Nov. 12 at the age of 61.  He had just wrapped up a tribute tour to his former bandleader with Band of Gypsys bassist Billy Cox and guitarists Eric Johnson and Kenny Wayne Shepherd.

Robert Plants Just Says No  Vocalist Robert Plant has issued a statement that says, "Contrary to a spate of recent reports, Robert Plant will not be touring or recording with Led Zeppelin."  And so ends the dark rumors of the full-on Led Zeppelin reunion.  That is NOT to say that guitarist Jimmy Page, bassist John Paul Jones, and drummer Jason Bonham, will not be working together.  While appearing on BBC Radio in late October, Mr. Jones said, "We are trying out a couple of singers.  It's sounding great and we want to get on and get out there."  Jones also confirmed that the group plan on recording with a new line-up and pointed out "There's no point in finding another Robert.  It's got to be right.  We don't want to be our own tribute band."  No further details of who auditioned have been given.  Yardbirds (Mark III) anyone?

In related news, Jimmy Page is one of the featured guitarists in the new documentary It Might Get Loud.  The film, directed by Davis Guggenheim, also stars U2's The Edge, and Jack White.  It is due for distribution early next year.

Mac Attack  Lindsey Buckingham has announced that Fleetwood Mac (sans Christine McVie) will embark on another full-on tour this spring.  His latest solo album, Gift of Screws, has just hit shelves and features Mick Fleetwood and John McVie on two tracks.

File Under The Covers  Eurythmic Dave Stewart has teamed up with sex-toy maker Jimmyjane on a line of vibrators that will be distributed through his Rock Fabulous Merchandising company.  Little did we know, Stewart also owns a chain of erotic boutiques called Coco der Mer.  The new vibrator will be available in several packages, including one that is housed in a book on the history of sex, another as a stand alone chrome version, or a deluxe model that is embedded with diamonds (SRP: $2,000).  He said the product is for people "discerning enough to want the very best whether it is cloths, alcohol, music, or vibrators."   To help launch the vibrator Stewart has written a new song called "Let's Do It Again."  Now I understand that video for "Sweet Dreams."

QUEEN & PAUL RODGERS RETURN  Paul Rodgers, late of Bad Company and Free, teamed up with ex-Queen guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor a few years back for some stadium touring and a live album.  Now the trio have released their first studio recording, titled The Cosmos Rock.  While Queen bassist John Deacon continues to commit to his "retirement," drummer Roger Taylor projected that the new album "will be a creative rebirth for us."

October 2008

Saw Doctors Hit Number One  The Celtic Rock Group Saw Doctors topped the Irish Music Charts the third week of October with a Rock-ed up version of the Sugababes tune "About You Now."  It is the first time the group has hit number one in 17 years.  The song, which was recorded as a fundraiser for the Salerno Cystic Fibrosis Fund in Galway, has raised over 10,000 Euro.  The Saw Doctors begin a new tour in November.  For more information, visit their website SawDoctors.com.

Strawbs celebrate 40 years of Recording  The Hero & Heroine lineup of the Strawbs have gone back into the recording studio to produce a disc of all new material.  It marks the groups 40th anniversary as recording stars.  The new disc, entitled The Broken Hearted Bride debuted on concert stages in the US beginning with a show at the legendary BB King Blues Club in New York City's Times Square.  The first 1,000 fans to pre-order the disc through their Witchwood Records website will not only get their name included in the packaging but will also receive a newly recorded live CD of leader Dave Cousins - First Solo Tour.  Meanwhile, the missing titles from the A&M years have finally been re-issued (Strawbs, Dragonfly, Nomadness).  Each include bonus tracks.  Additionally, the group have released a CD and DVD of an electric show recorded in March of 2006 entitled Lay Down with the Strawbs.  These two discs will more than likely mark the last recording with keyboardist John Hawken as he has (according to the official website) decided that it is time to give up the rigors of life on the road.  In a prepared statement, Mr. Hawken said, "I regard the last 4 years as an unexpected bonus, filled with wonderful music and a lot of laughter.  This is not something I give up lightly, but each year I've found touring more exhausting than the year before and my recent health problem finally decided the issue.  It's time to go.  I wish the remaining band members every success and happiness in their musical ventures.  I hope we meet up again somewhere down the road."  In related news, John Ford - one of the 2 Strawbs bass players - has released two tracks available for download from his MySpace site.  A music video for one of the tracks, "Big Hit in India," is planned with a full length album of the same name to follow.  The disc will be available from Ford's label Whole Shot Records.  Click here for interviews and link to Strawbs photos.

Like a Rolling Stone...

Ronnie Wood has reportedly checked into a rehabilitation center (again) for alcohol abuse.  Following a ten day binge with a young waitress (18 year old Russian bombshell Ekaterina Ivanova) the 61 year old Rolling Stones guitarist got a phone call from Mrs. Wood saying it's time to pack the bags.  A spokeswoman for Mr. Wood said, "His close family and friends say he is seeking help and look forward to his recovery."

The Return of The Beatles original Drummer Pete Best  Cottage Views just received a preview copy of the brand new Pete Best Band single "Broken."  Very little information was attached, but the sound is absolutely fab...  reminding us of Oasis in Melodic Soft Rock mode, and I mean that in the very best sense of the words.  This is what we know right now...  The lineup on the forthcoming album, Haymans Green (due next month) is Pete and brother Roag on drums, Phil Melia - lead guitar, vocals, Paul Parry - bass, vocals, and Tony Flynn - rhythm guitar, vocals.

Pete Best and Cottage Views' Michael A. Cimino, 2003.

For Cottage Views exclusive interview with the One and Only Pete Best click here.

The Family that plays together...  A new disc, entitled The Heavy Circles is starting to get some notoriety for catchy Pop-Rock tunes.  It's no wonder - the band is actually Paul Simon, his son Harper, and wife Edie Brickell.  Guest appearances fromSean Lennon and Martha Wainwright add to the mix.  Another disc to look for is from Heidi Jo Hines, the daughter of ex-Moody Blues and Wings guitarist Denny Laine and the late model/singer Jo Jo Laine (pictured right).  Advance hype is she is being compared to Janis Joplin and is in great demand.

March 2008

Dave Clark 5 Update  Just weeks before being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, DC5 keyboardist/vocalist Mike Smith died of pneumonia on Feb. 28.  He was 64 years old.  Smith had never fully recovered from a fall in 2003 that left him partially paralyzed.  The spinal cord injury had led to many complications, including the chest infection which he eventually succumbed to.  His agent, Margo Lewis, said "He was extremely excited and honored to have been inducted [to the Hall of Fame].  I am glad that he will be remembered as a hall of famer, because he was in so many ways."

Winwood Returns  Steve Winwood returns with his latest solo album next month, Nine Lives.  The single, "Dirty City," featuring a scorching guitar solo from Eric Clapton, has already been released to radio, and the two old friends/superstars are on the road playing to sold out and rave reviews (trust me, I was there!).

Kinks to Kontinue?  During a recent interview promoting his latest solo album Ray Davies disclosed that he desired to reform the Kinks with his brother Dave, stating "It was easy to be a Kink, hard to be me."  Working Man's Cafe, the new 12 track solo disc, has been available in the UK for some time and has now finally been released in the states.  Ray is doing some touring despite complications from the gunshot wound he took from a mugger in New Orleans 4 years ago.  To read the Cottage Views interviews with the brothers Davies click here.

Country Rockin'  Border Town is a new compilation disc that brings together the very best of The Souther Hillman Furay Band and music from five J D Souther solo albums.

Folk-Rockin'  The Gathering (Legends of Folk-Rock) are an ad-hoc supergroup of seasoned veterans of the UK Folk-Rock scene, featuring Jerry Donahue (Fairport Convention, Fotheringay), Rick Kemp (Steeleye Span), Ray Jackson (Lindisfarne), Clive Bunker (Jethro Tull, Pentangle), and Doug Morter (Albion Band).  The group is fronted by vocalist Kristina Donahue (the daughter of Jerry).  Currently on a tour of the UK, it is uncertain if the group will enter the studio to record although a hand-full of new songs have already been written.

Dave Clark 5 to be inducted into R&R Hall of Fame

Alongside John Mellencamp, Leonard Cohen, and the Ventures, the Dave Clark 5 will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on March 10th.  They also announced that their long out of print catalog will be reissued shortly.  Disco diva Madonna gets the nod this year too.  Now what about some real rockers like Badfinger?

Just in Case you Missed 'em!

Now that the holiday blitz is over, and the record companies are (once again) crying the blues, we have much to celebrate as good, good music is out there for those who seek it.

Things from England:  Ringo is back, baby! with Liverpool 8 - co-produced with Dave Stewart of Eurythmics.  I've been saying for years that Dave S. should team up with some Liverpudlians - shouldn't Joey Molland be next?

Yes bassist Chris Squire has re-issued his solo album Fish out of Water that was recorded at the height of Yes-fame in 1975.  It now contains bonus tracks and a DVD featuring rare promo clips.

Speaking of Prog-Art-Rock, check out Odin Dragonfly - Offerings - it is the debut solo outing from Heather Findlay & Angela Gordon of Mostly Autumn fame.  Meanwhile, the group have a limited edition new disc, Glass Shadows, available through their website.

Dear Mr. Fantasy:  A Celebration for Jim Capaldi is an excellent tribute to the late/great lyricist/drummer from Traffic.  This concert recording is also available on DVD and contains performances by Steve Winwood, Pete Townshend, Joe Walsh, Cat Stevens, Paul Weller, and more!

Last but not least is a few compilations that have arrived from overseas:

Your Time is Gonna Come - The Roots of Led Zeppelin 1964-1969 is a 25 track disc exploring tracks that Page, Plant, Jones, and Bonham performed on as session men, including hard to find rarities (J. P. Jones solo single "Baja"), notable tracks by Marc Bolan (T. Rex), P. J. Proby, Screaming Lord Sutch, and others.

Clapton is God - The Cream of Early Eric is a 40 track double disc featuring Slowhand as a Yardbird, a Bluesbreaker, an Immediate Allstar, and backing blues legend Sonny Boy Williamson.

Frank Zappa Street?

Mountain - Masters of War.jpg (105492 bytes)   Legendary Rockers Mountain Return with New Disc

Brian Ferry has got it going on, and now so does Leslie West & Corky Laing - that is a new disc full of Bob Dylan interpretations that can only be best described as the title has it - Mountain - Masters of War.  The 12 track disc has the Mountain-men rounded out by guest appearances from bassist Kenny Aronson, Gov't Mule/Allman Brothers guitarist Warren Haynes, and Ozzy Osbourne - who contributes vocals to the title track.  "Blowing in the Wind" receives both a "heavy" and "acoustic" treatment and "Like a Rolling Stone" is just Corky Laing laying down a steady beat while rapping out the lyrics.  No light affair, Masters of War is in-your-face Mountain as they are best remembered - rocking hard.  The new disc is out on West's own record label that he named after his current love interest, Shay Garr.  West said, "It's called 'Big Rack Records' because my fiancée has a nice, big rack." Amen.

The Return of Joni:  Following Paul McCartney's grand new disc on the Starbucks label is Joni Mitchell's first disc of new material in 9 years.  Entitled Shine, the disc is self produced and includes a musical interpretation of the Rudyard Kipling poem "If" as well as a new version of her 70's hit "Big Yellow Taxi."  Expect heavy promotion on the disc.  Mr. McCartney's disc reached #3 in the Billboard charts with the help of Starbucks in-store promotions.

Newsbytes:  Brian May and Roger Taylor of Queen continue to collaborate with Free/Bad Company front-man Paul Rodgers - expect a disc of new material sometime in 2007.  Rod Stewart and percussionist Evelyn Glennie have been decorated by the British Empire for their contribution to music.  Replicas of Beatles' album covers will grace British postage stamps.

Recordings you might have missed... (Autumn 2006)

Late summer/early autumn cast many new discs of repute our way - including great works from Dylan, Petty, Cheap Trick, and Sammy Hagar that got substantial airplay, but if you missed these - check out:  Carl Perkins & Friends - Blue Suede Shoes, A Rockabilly Session featuring Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Ringo Starr and Dave Edmunds (yeah, it's a long title but worth every cent!).  This is the long awaited soundtrack to the television special taped back in 1985.  Also, don't miss John Waite - Downtown Journey of  a Heart (new songs and re-recorded hits, including a duet with Alison Krauss on "Missing You"), a CD single from Annie Haslam with Magenta - Night and Day, Steve Hackett - Wild Orchids, Mudbone's debut album recorded with Eurythmic Dave Stewart (check out their groovy colab on the Alfie soundtrack), Tony Joe White - Uncovered, former Fairport Convention/Trader Horne vocalist Judy Dyble - The Whorl (featuring a guest appearance by Robert Fripp), and a third solo disc from ex-Rockpile guitarist Billy Bremner - No If's, Buts & Maybes.  The Angel Air label has re-issued Don't Blame Me... I Just Play Bass the 1998 solo album from Foghat/Savoy Brown bassist Tony Stevens and has dug a couple of gems out of the archives, including Mott the Hoople - Live at the Fillmore West, San Francisco 1970 and Bad Company - Live in Albequerque 1976.  The Electric Light Orchestra get the repackage treatment for their first two albums - now expanded to 3 CDs to include alternate mixes, out-takes, and demos of what was to come.  Another re-issue of note is Sweeney Todd - If wishes were horses... Beggars would Ride which features the vocals of then 16 year old Bryan Adams who replaced the original singer Nick Gilder.  Finally, word has it that Vanilla Fudge are back in the studio and are recording a tribute to Led Zeppelin tentatively titled The Song Almost Remains the Same.

Celtic Chanteuse Loreena McKennitt Returns  The long awaited follow up to 1997's Book of Secrets is close at hand, as Ms. McKennitt revealed "we have finished our most recent sojourn in the studio" in a recent statement.  The disc, entitled An Ancient Muse, was recorded at Peter Gabriel's Real World Loreena McKennitt - An Ancient Muse.jpg (64472 bytes) Studios in England, and features long-standing colleagues Brian Hughes and Donald Quan as well as appearances from cellist Caroline Lavelle and violinist Hugh Marsh, viol group Fretwork, and Norwegian musician Annbjørg Lien who performs on traditional instruments hardanger fiddle and nyckelharpe.  In the statement, Ms. McKennitt said, "Through my music, I have tried in my own humble way to explore many facets of history and humanity through the strong belief that there is more to bind us together than tear us apart.  I would like to add my voice to the many others around the world who come from various religious and non-religious persuasions who believe that the voice of sensitivity, moderation, tolerance, forgiveness and love is the one which must prevail.  Hopefully we can make sure that raising our voice for peace is heard."

Sept. 8  For the first time in thirty years Bob Dylan has topped the charts with the #1 smash Modern Times.  While having picked up several awards in recent years this is the first time that a Dylan record has hit number 1 since 1976's Desire.

Aug. 13  Almost 37 years to the day, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young returned to the site of the original Woodstock Music & Arts Festival for one of the most energized, and politically motivated, concerts of their career.  It was sold out.

"I made a whole record about the war, and some people are still stupid enough to say I did it for the money.  They're out of touch.  It's about a fucking war that people are getting killed in."      Neil Young

Billy Preston RIP  Keyboard player extraordinaire Billy Preston passed away on Tuesday June 6 after a long battle with kidney failure.  Preston had received a kidney transplant in 2002, but has been on dialysis since the kidney failed last year.  In November a heart infection left him in a coma from which he never recovered.  He was 59 years old.  Preston, who worked with some of the greatest musicians of all time, including Ray Charles, Little Richard, Eric Clapton, and the Rolling Stones, will best be remembered as the true "Fifth Beatle" for his work during the recording of the Get Back Sessions.  He is also the only musician ever to be credited on a Beatles record sleeve when the single for Get Back/Don't Let me Down was billed as The Beatles with Billy Preston.

Strawbs Special Aired on Cottage Views    May 2, Cottage Views Classic Rock Music Hour, hosted by Michael A. Cimino, broadcasted its one hour radio special dedicated to the music and history of Great Britain’s progressive Folk-Rock legends the Strawbs.  The show has been archived for computer-listeners to return to at will.

Cimino presented a selection of music from all facets of their career and solo ventures.  “With the wealth of material that has recently been released through Witchwood Media it is undeniable that this music deserves re-investigation,” he said.  “Since the band returned to full-time work some five years ago they have been more prolific than the most successful artists, including people like Bruce Springsteen.  The show also featured snippets of interviews that Mr. Cimino conducted with principle Dave Cousins, as well as band members Dave Lambert and John Ford.

Cottage Views Classic Rock Music Hour is an internet-streaming radio show that is an extension of Cottage Views.  Log on to www.RocklandWorldRadio.com.  Cimino says the premise of the radio show is “the best independently released Rock from vintage artists.”

Elton John Raises Money for AIDS  Approximately 10,000 articles of clothing  donated by Elton John raised $700,000 for the Elton John Aids Foundation.  Included in the collection was the polka-dot suit worn by the singer at the 2001 Grammy Awards, and outfits designed by Versace and Louis Vuitton.  The charity has become an annual event held in New York.

Cottage Views Hits the Airwaves  After appearing on RocklandWorldRadio.com as a guest, Cottage Views Editor/Publisher Michael A. Cimino has been offered his own time slot.  Cimino kicked off his show on March 7 by playing "John George Ringo & Paul" from Liverpool Express, the shows un-official theme song, and continued with  music from Badfinger's Joey Molland, the Strawbs, and other recordings that are not tied to any major label.  Rockland World Radio is an internet radio program that is heard around the world celebrating Music, Art & Culture.  Just prior to the show, Mr. Cimino said, "I've always supported the underdogs in Rock 'n' Roll, and it's time that this music is valued for what it is - great!"

More Strawbs!  As if six new releases in little more than four years wasn't enough, the Strawbs have just released two more discs from the archives. Hot on the heals of Painted Sky (the brand new acoustic disc) comes Recollection and a new compilation entitled The Witchwood Project.  Recollection is a digitally mixed live recording dating back to 1970 that features the historic line-up of Dave Cousins, Tony Hooper, Richard Hudson and John Ford, and keyboard maestro Rick Wakeman prior to his joining Yes.  The Witchwood Project compiles new, old, and rare Strawbs tracks alongside new signings to the Witchwood Media label, including a track from Dead Like Harry, who have just recently received the Best New Band award from the UK's Rock Society.  In addition, look for the Strawbs' Heartbreak Hill sometime this spring.  Heartbreak Hill is a disc the Strawbs recorded in 1978 but was left unheard until a limited edition compact disc of the tapes was issued in 1995.  The new "Platinum Edition" features a new digital remix, and by the sample that is included on The Witchwood Project it should prove nothing short of spectacular.

Andy Timmons Band Returns  Andy Timmons, who scored big on the Cottage Views poll with his tribute to George Harrison ("Slips Away") has returned with his first unified band effort since leaving 80's heavy hitters Danger Danger.  The new disc (to be released on Favored Nations in May), which was recorded with his steady sidekicks bassist Mike Daane and drummer Mitch Marine, contains ten proper tracks as well as one hidden bonus track.  Of the bonus track, described as a 'showcase of chicken-fried guitar picking,' Timmons said, "You feel like you're about to run off the road at any moment when you listen to this thing.  That's why it's called "Headed For the Ditch."  It was a blast to record and we just had to put it on as a surprise at the end."  Also included is "Gone," Timmons' tribute to the victims of September 11, 2001.

Held up Willie Nile disc released  After over a year of delays Willie Nile has finally released Streets of New York, his first album in six years.  Assisting Nile on the recording is Cottage Views' former MVP Andy York, the Wallflowers' Jacob Dylan and Rami Jaffee, as well as Bob Dylan sidekick Larry Campbell.  Praise for the disc has already come from some high ranking officials.  Bono was quoted, "a great album...the songs all stand on their own."  Graham Parker added, "Streets of New York is a real gem...every track a winner," while Lou Reed said flat out, "a great album."  Ian Hunter shouted, "Well done!" and Little Steven said, "Willie Nile is so good I can't believe he's not from New Jersey!"  The disc is on the brand new 00:02:59 label (pronounced "two minutes fifty-nine" - taken from the Clash tune "Hitsville UK").

U2 the big Winners at Grammy Awards  Irish Rockers U2 cleaned up at the Grammy Awards on Feb. 8, taking home 5 awards.  They won big for Album of the year, Song of the year ("SoU2.jpg (94149 bytes)metimes you can't make it on your Own"), Rock Album of the year, Rock Song of the year ("City of Blinding Lights"), and best Rock Performance of the year ("Sometimes you can't make it on your Own").  Additionally, the Producer of the Year award went to Steve Lillywhite for producing U2's latest sensation, How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb.  Other Classic Rockers who received awards were Bruce Springsteen (Best Solo Rock Vocal for "Devils & Dust"), Bob Dylan (Best Compilation Soundtrack for No Direction Home, and Best Long Form Video for No Direction Home), Delbert McClinton (Best Contemporary Blues Album for Cost of Living), and B B King and Friends (Best Traditional Blues Album for 80).

U2 claim 3 Awards  In a ceremony in their hometown of Dublin, Ireland, U2 were awarded three Meteor Ireland Music Awards.  The group, represented by bassist Adam Clayton, took home best Irish Band, best Live Performance, and best Irish Album.  At the same ceremony The Pogues received a lifetime achievement award.

Status Quo celebrate 40 years with new disc and DVD  Already available in the UK, Sanctuary Records have now released Status Quo's latest disc, The Party Ain't Over Yet, in the United States.  The disc is the groups 27th album in a 40 year career span.  Coinciding with the release of the audio CD is a two disc DVD of the same name that contains footage of the band recording their latest effort as well as archival promotional films from throughout their career.  Although the Quo's recent tour to promote the disc was cut short due to emergency surgery on guitarist Rick Parfitt's throat his recovery is eminent, and according to their website "The Party Ain't Over Yet - it's just getting started!"

Hall of Famers Record the Blues  Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees Dion and Eric Burdon will both release Blues oriented efforts in the new year.  While Burdon enlists a full band, Dion has chosen to stick to his Martin guitar accompanied by sparse percussion and little else.  Both discs are due in January 2006.

Mike Gibbins RIP  Badfinger’s original drummer, Mike Gibbins, passed away in his sleep on October 4, 2005, leaving Joey Molland the only surviving member of the original Badfinger band.  In a letter to the Badfinger Boogie online group, Joey wrote “he was much, much more than just the drummer from that band…  let’s not forget him, and what he stood for…  God bless you Mike.”  The entire letter can be read on badfingerboogie2@yahoogroups.com.
