Badfinger's Joey Molland
Journalist Michael A. Cimino first met Joey Molland when he was working at WZFM radio in Westchester, NY. WZFM had formerly been WRNW, the station at which Howard Stern had gotten his start. As WZFM's format was still pretty loose, the jocks could play whatever they liked - as long as it was Rock 'n' Roll and it didn't get too rambunctious. There Cimino played plenty of Beatles, starting his late night show every week with John Lennon's "Whatever Gets You thru the Night," and plenty of Badfinger. Luckily, he and the music director, Paul Cavelconte, both had an Apple Records jones, and the quality programming continued for a while.
As fate would have it, a time came when Badfinger (then touring with founding drummer Mike Gibbins) came to town and Cimino was dispatched out to cover the show. After the Bad boys blew the house down an interview took place and several cocktails prevailed. This was the beginning of a ritual that Cimino would adhere to every time that Joey would pass thru.
Years later when Without You - The Tragic Story of Badfinger (Francis Glover Books) came out Joey discussed doing his own book because he felt that Without You was biased and factually incorrect (see footnote below). Cimino recommended that he do an autobiography to which Joey countered with a suggestion that Cimino write it for him. Fast forward a few more years and, low and behold, that book Badfinger and Beyond - The Authorized Biography of Joey Molland is almost finished.
Cimino says, "I would have finished it already but too many cocktails, er, I mean, distractions got in the way." Anyway, it promises to include over 100 photographs (many never before seen) from Joey Molland's archives.
As for Joey (this piece is supposed to be about him, right?) he has just finished his third solo album which is available through his web site. All in all, not Bad for Badfinger fans everywhere.

* Both Joey Molland and Mike Gibbins have claimed to have never read Without You in it's entirety. Some passages have since been corrected and many more still contain fallacies. This problem is the whole reason that Joey Molland has desired to have his story written - he wants the facts to be out there, not myths. In similar fashion Mike Gibbins has stated that he doesn't like the myths that popped up since the original band split up.
